The title of this video is "A sequence of unfortunate events". We have all missed a bus or a train before but for this high school student missing the bus both saved and ruined his life. Due to the mishaps of his morning routine causing him to run behind schedule it meant that he was unable to make to the bus on time as if it was fate. As later on that same bus ended up having a fatal accident on its morning rout. Unfortunately for him though his highschool sweetheart did make it to the bus on time resulting in the loss of her life.
I worked with a friend to create the guitar riff you hear throughout the video as I have no knowledge of music creation or instruments. The aim was to create a piece of music that evokes a sad / depressing emotion. I wanted to keep it simple both in terms of composition and elements hence the use of a single guitar. The use of foley through out the video was also used to help with the emotional impact as foley can make it feel for intimate/ real.
I chose to use the same repeating riff throughout the piece so when it changes at the ending of the video and becomes more complex it has a much more greater emotional impact. I've been editing for a number of years to the point it's almost second nature to me. The use of the news report at the end with the visual of the text between the student and his girlfriend was to confirm to the viewer that it was his school bus that had crashed and that his partner didn't was among those who didn't survive.
I knew I wanted to use a simple guitar riff throughout the video as I found its simplicity to add to the emotion and the impact of the ending. As I don't know how to play the guitar I created a playlist of songs with a similar guitar riffs as a reference point so when working with my guitarist friend we were able to have the same sound in mind and be on the same page. I believe the resulting riff is a perfect blend of all these songs. Although these songs have a lot more energy and have a different tempo and mood then what I wanted to achieve, the guitar and riffs were all that I was after.
The guitar rift used through out the video.
The timeline of the video as seen in premiere pro.
Reflection:
What did I do?
I researched how different aspects of music can evoke different emotions in people. Using this I created a short film/video with the intention of evoking a sad emotional response from the audience. Along with creating an artist statement to follow up the video.researching
What went well?
I believe the editing aspect of the video turned out really well along with the guitar riff really helped with the emotional impact.
What didn't go well?
Im not a musician and have no musical talent or knowledge so I got help from a friend to create the sound for the video. The artist statement could have been longer.
So what does that mean?
I need to work on my music creation skills and knowledge as it is needed for most of path ways created by this course.
Now what do I need to learn next?
I need to learn music production and composition. I would like to at least learn the piano enough to be able to create simple songs and melodies.
Now what can I do differently in future?
Spend more time researching topics outside of the focal point of the project. For instance I should have researched music composition and how to make music instead of only researching the emotional effect of music.
The feedback on this project work given during class time.
The feedback from presenting the video in class was very positive. The video and music worked well together to convey the emotion. The use of sound to tell the story rather then show it for instance you didn’t see the bus crash but its implied thought sound and visual cues.
