Pre Class:
"Media transgress borders. This is their main purpose and function: to put people in contact with someone or something that would otherwise be beyond reach in time or space - like an image from the past or a voice from far away. (Fornas, Becker, Bjurstrom, & Ganetz, 2007, Consuming Media, p. 1)."
Question:
What do you make of this quote? What borders do media transgress?
Like a photograph media is a time capsule, it allows us to take a moment in time and show others in the future. The borders that media transgresses is, all of them. take a news clip for example, it could be in any language taken anywhere in the world but you’ll still be able to understand what's going on. how a song could be written in a different language but you still feel and understand the emotions and the meaning of the song.
DATA:
Genre: Pop.
Technical Production: Wide stereo imaging on the vocals, subtle sample of a bed creaking which sounds like an instrument in the background, chaotic track with a lot of dead air breaks in the track.
"Feel": calming yet chaotic, laid back and groovy.
How do you listen to music? - Digital/ Online and Analogue platforms
Spotify, Youtube, Radio, Download, Live, Off you phone, Headphones, SoundCloud, Records, Deezer, Cassette, Speakers, Play instrument, Ambient, CD.
20-30 years ago how did they consume music? Perhaps when they were my age.
vinyl records, vinyl singles (45's), Radio, Cassette, CD's.
What was there relationship with music compared to mine?
Music still effect's us the same as it did back then emotionally, however they also had an attachment to the physical media (CD's, cassette, Vinyl), where as now everything is streamed and we've lost that physical attachment.
Music had more value in the 1980's/90's
The value hasn't changed, they had more monetary attachment to music because they owned it physically, it was there copy forever. Now we have access to every song ever made at our fingertips but we no longer own it, its all online and streamed with no physical product, it can be taken away from us as quick as we gained access to it.
Albums are dead?
Yes and No. A majority of artists these days mostly make singles, then they go back and put them into albums. However there are still some artists that do album releases such as Eminem and Drake. Most of the time it comes down to money and how much they want to put into an album.
Singles are dead?
No. The cost of music production has come down 10 fold since the early days. Anyone with a laptop can make a song now and upload it to a number of sites to share it.
Week 1: What are some of the ways that the music consumption of music has changed over last 20/30 years? 2-3 paragraphs
If you wanted to listen to music 20-30 years ago you had a couple of options, you could listen on vinyl records, radio broadcasts or cassettes. With vinyl you could purchase singles or albums depending on what you wanted to listen to but you were limited to only being able to listen to what you owned or could borrow. radio allowed for a variety bc stations had a lot more money and were able to purchase more songs and albums and stations usually were themed.
Now days you can still purchase vinyls and cassettes and listen to radio, however with the advent of the internet, every song ever made is now at everyones finger tips. Now if you want to listen to music you many free/paid streaming services like spotify and youtube where you can access every song at any time in any place, with an internet connection.
Pick 3 artist that influenced you then 3 artist that influenced them.
Eminem, deadmau5, Queen
Reflection:
What have I learned this week? This could be related to soft skills or hard skills.
This week as a class discussed how we listen to music compared to how our parents would have listened.
What did that involve? Go into more details.
I took a deeper look into a song I had been listening to for a while and looked into its composition and what it is about the song that draws me to listening to it on repeat.
What feedback have I received this week? How am I going to address it?
I had to show the people either side of be the song I like that they haven't heard before. They also agreed that is was a good song.
What challenges did I encounter? How did I/how am I going to address them?
I wasn't sure what to do for the pre class as this was out first class and we weren't told where the class content was.
