Why listen to music:
coping mechanism - stress, excitement - pumped up, emotional connection - film, to impact another medium, escapism, socialise.
Music does not contain emotion it brings the emotion out of us. It can be made with emotion and passion but it doesn't mean the listener is guaranteed to feel that emotion or passion.
Music tropes used in film: Conventions that are used to convey an emotional response.
The bird you hear at the beginning of every desert scene is a native American eagle regardless of the country its filmed in.

Below is an example of how music can convey emotion regardless of what the footage is about. In this case it conveys intensity/ drama then it changes to excitement.
Harry Potter Hedwig's Theme: Sounds mystical due to its slow and eerie rythem. It feels slightly suspenseful and supernatural. It's a motif.
