What is a patch bay:
A patchbay allows you to set the default routing of the studio. It takes all the audio gear connectors ie the connectors in the back of the console and the cable snake and brings them to one place for easy routing. Using patch leads you can temporarily change the routing depending on what you are trying to achive ie inserting outboard compressor on the console.
How does it work:
As displayed in the image below patchbays have three modes Normal, Half-Normal and through which references how the signal flows through everything.
Normal mode the top and bottom connectors are linked by default, when you plug a patch lead in it breaks the link and passes the singal straight thorugh for both top and bottom.
Half-Normal mode is the same as Normal but the link does not break when you plug a patch lead in.
Through mode is a straight pass thorugh with no link between the top and bottom.
Top Out Bottom In
Signal flows from the top of the patchbay to the bottom.
Time domain:
from 1-5 miliseconds is what we call comb filtering. 20-30 miliseconds is when the human ear starts to hear different sounds.
duplicate track and move one clip a few milliseconds.

What?
What activities have I completed this week?
This week we were tasked with researching what a patchbay is and how they work i.e normal and half normal. We went over more theory about time domain and how we can use it in different ways to create different effects using simple things like duplicating tracks I'm moving them a few milliseconds. The rest of the time was spent working on our project 3 mix.
So What?
So, what have I learned this week?
This week we learned more about time domain and comb filtering for example by shifting a sound one to five milliseconds you have a comb filtering effect and 20 to 30 milliseconds is when the human ear can start hearing the different sounds. We also learned that you can duplicate a track and move it a few milliseconds to achieve either of those effects. We learned more about patchbays and David cleared up some things he had said about how they worked when we first started. As he initially told us was a white lie just so that everyone could understand the basics but we learned about normalling in half normalling and a bit more about how the studio is actually wired compared to how we thought it was.
Am I on the right track with this unit?
I think I'm on the right track as for my project 2 I focused heavily on signal flow and how the control room is wired and I had already created a wiring diagram which was able to use to demonstrate my knowledge of how the patchbay was set up. Project 3 is coming along nicely and I'm really happy with how it's turned out but I know that I'm going to have a crunch time soon where i'm going to have to go through and work on all my learning journals.
Now What?
Now what will I do to move forward?
I want to spent more time on my learning journals working on the reflections and filling out some of the areas where I just type something quickly. I want to finish my project 3 mix and start working on they written component to it.
