This class is again essential for EVERYONE in AUD176 to attend, as it will continue to provide you the Foundation of this Unit/Module; and also continue to advance the Studio Signal Flow. Please do not miss this class and the opportunity to fully understand the standards required for Project 1!!!
This week in addition to practicing the console signal flow we also added recording into the process. We struggled to begin with because the IO was not configured properly but once it was setup everyone was able to practice multiple times.
step one: live room -> control room
step two: Gain dial -> MTR -> matrix 1/2 -> short fader up -> turn on short fader mix -> master fader up -> monitor dial up
step three: Protools I button and arm for recording -> turn off short fader mix -> long fader up -> turn on long fader mix
steps one through three of signal flow and we learnt steps four and five. Step one is source to console, step two is console to tape (pre tape), step three is tape to console (post tape), step four is console to tape (pre tape print) and step five is tape to console (post tape print).

Pro tools: https://www.avid.com/pro-tools
I-lok is a usb device that contains all your software license, but it doesn't contain the software itself.
A multi-track recording is when you record multiple audio inputs simultaneously. In the beginning of the music industry they started with single channel recorders that then lead dual channel stereo recorders that then lead to 4, 8, 16, 24 channel recorders.
To do a multitrack recording with the ASP4816 consoles you need to select the matrix button that corresponds to the channel you want to record to 1 to 1 , 2 to 2 etc. In Protools (2022) you need to create the number the channels that you are intending to record and set the I/O input to the corresponding channel you want to record 1 to 1, 2 to 2 etc. Then you need to arm the tracks you want to record by pressing the arm button on the channel and the arm button next to the play button, once you are all set up you can hit play to start recording and hit stop to stop recording.
I found this video while looking for recording consoles and I found it really interesting as he uses a 4 channel cassette tape recorder.
Reflection
What?
What activities have I completed this week?
This week we practised signal flow more and we were given a band recording from one of the other campuses to practise importing into Pro Tools and doing a mix on the console. We learned about multitrack recording and how to do it with this studio setup. I went and found the manual for the console so I can learn how it's routed to get a better understanding on how to use it.
So What?
So, what have I learned this week?
This week we learned more detail about signal flow along with practising it on the console. Headphone mix/ Talkback was introduced and we learned how to set tit up on a console so the artist in the live room can hear what we hear and themselves. We learnt bit more about Pro Tools and how to import audio and set it up with the console along with the IO settings needed so can start mixing and recording on the console. We learned about ilok USB keys and how they hold licences for software and plugins like Pro Tools. We learned about the three processing categories spectral (EQ, filters), dynamics (compressor, limiter, gate, expander), time domain (reverb, echo delay). We learnt about project 1 and it's recording requirements as well as our signal flow exam that we have to practise for.
Am I on the right track with this unit?
This week it was good getting more time on the console and being able to familiarise myself with them. I am really enjoy this class and its making me want to search up more and about recording using multitrack like the original 4 channel cassette tape recorders.
Now What?
Now what will I do to move forward?
I need to practise more of my signal flow I want to try and get faster and faster with it. I also need to start planning for project 1 along with reading the manual and look at the patchbay so I have a better understanding of how the studio itself is wired up.
