This week was spent doing our signal flow exams and I worked on my mix more to fix the areas where I "Cheated".
When I started this class I was going into it with the knowledge I had gained through watching YouTube tutorials online and although I've spent the past four or five years researching on my own I really enjoyed being taught things properly and being able to actually ask questions and have them answered. I've enjoyed this class alot more than my previous two classes as there is a lot more practical exercises in this class compared to theory which I much prefer.
I've always been a bit of a tech head and I've always enjoyed researching consoles and how they're wired and set up and I enjoyed the challenge of trying to figure out how these studios were wired up and it's given me good inspiration for how on a wire up my future studio. This class is also made me start to consider teaching audio not just making it as a number of classes I was helping people and I loved trying to help them understand how things worked by re wording and repeating things.
I loved all the mixing exercises we did although everyone else hated the music and was always joking about it I actually rather liked them and I really enjoyed having some practical exercises like mixing on consoles and within Pro Tools and doing one hour mixes. I definitely learned a lot in this class and it's made me excited for the studio class and the live sound class yet to come .
The only issue with this class is it's made me really want to start buying gear and made me really wanna start setting up my own studio but I'm not in a position financially to do either of those so for now I just have to keep learning.
Reflection
What?
What activities have I completed this week?
This week we did our signal flow exams individually and we worked on our project 3 mixes and our project 3 written components. I got David to look at my mix and he told me an area where I needed to fix it to be able to pass.
So What?
So, what have I learned this week?
This week I learned that for project 3 the way I was mixing was incorrect so I had to go through and undo my mix so I could do it correctly and although it was a pain it ended up sounding better in the end so that's that. I understood more about Pro Tools metering and why we had to mix to the level that we did as I didn't realise initially -18in Pro Tools classic metering is actually zero with K20 metering which is what the consoles use. I also learnt about VCA tracks within Pro Tools and how I can use them instead of a bus track to control the volume of instruments and the overall volume of the mix instead of using the master fader like I was.
Am I on the right track with this unit?
I still need to go through my learning journals and work on my reflections more but I'm getting there. My project 3 mix is basically done now that I've mixed it correctly and I have learned a new technique of using Windows speech to text which is allowed me to right more quickly and efficiently compared to typing which I've always struggled with.
Now What?
Now what will I do to move forward?
I need to go through and continue working on my written component project 3 and get it finalised by week's end and go back through and double check all of my weekly reflections and make sure everything's ready to submit.
What feedback did I receive this week?
Add notes below from any feedback provided in class, during activities or as part of tasks.
David had a look at my project 3 mix and the first thing he did before even hitting play was point out that the way I had mixed using bus channels was not correct and then I had to mix using the all channel faders instead and I went and researched VCA tracks and remixed using those which david was happy with.
